about

I wrote Olive Green in July 2012 for Thomas Maddux and Turkeyes Laffity's wedding.

lyrics

In the time way back when
I was just a ranch hand
I dreamt one day the homestead would be mine

With no gun yet on my hip,
Nor no hair on my upper lip
I had no idea that day I'd meet my bride

On the twelfth day of July
I took my colt out for a ride
Hiyo Silver galloped right out of his shoes

So I hitched him to a sycamore
As I hurried on my way
To the blacksmith, she could make me four anew

And I saw her sitting there
In a dress of olive green
Hammering away at steel hot as the sun

The sparks weren't from the anvil
They were flying from my heart
And I knew right then that I had found the one

Slowly I approached
A lump was forming in my throat
It felt just about the size of San Jose

I attempted a "Hello"
But all that came out was a groan
And when she looked at me I fainted straight away

When I came around
I thought I had surely drowned
She had poured a pail of water o'er my head

I watched as her concerned look
Into amusement turned
And I summoned all my courage and I said:

I saw you sitting there
In your dress of olive green
Hammering away at steel hot as the sun

The sparks weren't from the anvil
They were flying from my heart
And I knew right then that I had found the one

Well she said back to me
You're no more than seventeen
But there's something in your eyes that's more mature

I have never loved another
Since my husband met that train
But for you I'll give it one try more

I saw you standing there
Tear-filled eyes of olive green
On our wedding in July hot as the sun

Watched the señoritas dancing
As the mariachis sing
"Cielito lindo," darling sweet one

I saw you sitting there
In your dress of olive green
Hammering away at steel hot as the sun

The sparks weren't from the anvil
They were flying from our hearts
And I knew right then that I had found the one
